The Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) threatens our communities, water, and lands by cutting through some of the steepest and most landslide-prone terrain in the United States. No other large gas transmission pipeline has ever attempted to cross so many miles of high landslide-risk terrain. We are calling on the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) to enforce stronger protections for communities, streams, and wildlife.
Construction through our mountainous terrain with highly erodible soils caused damage to rivers, streams, wetlands, and groundwater, impacting drinking water supplies and aquatic habitats.
Take Action Now: Sign our letter and petition to decision-makers urging them to strengthen pipeline safety regulations and environmental protections. Fill out the form below to add your voice!
Our Letter:
Dear Decision Makers,
I am writing to urge your agency to enforce stronger safety and environmental protections for pipelines built in steep and landslide-prone terrain, such as the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP). No other large gas transmission pipeline in the U.S. has ever attempted to cross so many miles of high landslide-risk terrain, making it critical to implement stricter oversight.
I call on you to:
- Require trenchless crossing methods instead of dam-and-flume to protect streams and wetlands.
- Enforce pre- and post-construction monitoring to track long-term environmental impacts.
- Ensure full restoration of damaged streams, with additional mitigation to prevent sedimentation.
- Implement annual post-construction monitoring until pre-construction conditions are restored.
- Assess benthic macroinvertebrates to measure the impact on aquatic life.
The Appalachian region is particularly vulnerable to landslides and erosion, and clearing land for pipelines increases these risks. We need stronger protections to ensure the safety of our communities and natural resources.
Please take action to strengthen regulations and hold pipeline developers accountable.
Thank you,
West Virginia Rivers Coalition and undersigned members
