Before the public comment period closes on Thursday, July 27, add your voice opposing draft permit R13-3563 for the Thunder Mountain Environmental Services, LLC (TMES) medical waste-to-fuel facility in Ravenswood, WV.
This facility's proposed incineration technology for infectious medical waste goes against the strict regulations set by the WV Department of Health, prohibiting such methods in commercial medical waste facilities. WVDEP must deny this air pollution permit to protect the well-being of Ohio Valley residents.
The draft permit, as it stands, would allow TMES to process a 1,500 pounds of toxic medical waste per hour, leading to potential health hazards in our communities. The engineering report itself acknowledges that "some level" of combustion will occur, rending this incinerator unsafe.
Our concerns do not end there. The pollution dispersion modeling, waste management protocols, and dioxin emission limits in the draft permit are insufficient to safeguard public health. Additionally, greenhouse gas emissions need to be strictly regulated.
The pollutants associated with this facility are hazardous and toxic, posing significant risks to our environment and well-being. Nobody should have a facility like this in their backyard.
Send a message to WVDEP Division of Air Quality now: Protect the health of West Virginians. No toxic medical waste incinerator in our communities!
