Toxic “forever” chemicals have been found in the raw water used to supply drinking water to approximately 700,000 West Virginians. Known as PFAS, per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances are manmade chemicals that do not break down in nature and can cause adverse health effects, including cancer, at very low levels. Unsafe levels of PFAS have been found in the raw water supply for 130 community water systems. The responsibility for addressing this contamination should not be placed on water utilities or ratepayers.

The PFAS Protection Act, HB 3189, is currently being considered by the House Energy and Manufacturing Committee. This bill will require the state to take immediate action to identify and reduce PFAS at the source, and require limits be established on PFAS discharges into our drinking water sources. This bill helps hold polluters responsible for cleaning up and preventing further contamination of our drinking water sources.

I’m concerned that unsafe levels of toxic “forever chemicals”, known as PFAS, have been found in the raw water for 130 water systems serving approximately 700,000 West Virginians. PFAS are manmade chemicals that do not break down in nature and are known to cause adverse health effects, including cancer, at very low levels. A bill in your Energy & Manufacturing Committee called the PFAS Protection Act, HB 3189, will take sensible next steps to address this problem. I ask for your support of this important bill. The PFAS Protection Act helps to reduce PFAS at its source so that water utilities and ratepayers are not burdened with treatment costs by: - Directing the DEP to develop action plans to identify and address the sources of PFAS contaminating drinking water supplies. - Requiring industry to monitor and report PFAS discharges. - Establishing statewide limits on PFAS discharges into water supplies upon EPA’s issuance of recommended criteria.
