Thanks to your advocacy, WVDEP is holding APG Polytech, LLC (APG), a plastics manufacturer in Apple Grove, WV, accountable for past pollution — but the work isn't done.
Right now, DEP is reviewing a permit modification that would require the company to install new treatment systems for 1,4-Dioxane, a harmful contaminant that poses serious risks to drinking water and public health.
This modification is part of a legal order — not a proactive step by APG. They’re simply doing what’s required. That’s why it’s critical for DEP to:
The Issue: Dangerous Chemical Discharge
APG has been discharging a harmful compound known as 1,4-dioxane (1,4-D) into the Ohio River, which serves as the drinking water source for over 5 million people. 1,4-D is a likely human carcinogen that has been banned in California due to its links to cancer, persistence in water, and resistance to standard waste and drinking water treatments. This compound is commonly found in everyday products like cosmetics, detergents, shampoos, and even some pharmaceuticals.
The Impact: Health and Environmental Risks
Industrial releases of 1,4-D into drinking water supplies pose an unreasonable risk to communities like Huntington. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), there's an increased cancer risk if you consume water sourced from areas with high 1,4-D contamination. This situation is simply unacceptable.
