Members of our team recently traveled to Mingo County to support flood relief efforts. We saw firsthand how overwhelming the need is — we helped muck out homes, prepared a warm meal, and supported residents still struggling to rebuild their lives. The needs in southern West Virginia are astronomical, and this funding is long overdue.
The National Guard has now pulled out of impacted areas in southern West Virginia, and shelters and local distribution centers are beginning to close — yet people are still mucking out their homes, and communities are far from recovered.
Newly introduced House Bill 3502 proposes a $250 million investment in the Flood Resiliency Trust Fund — a fund designed to support flood prevention and protection, with a focus on helping communities that need it most. To date, it has never received funding. Now is the time to change that.
While it is unclear if the passage of this bill could provide immediate aid to residents in southern West Virginia, funding for the Flood Resiliency Trust Fund will help communities prevent and prepare for future flooding.
Urge your Delegate and members of the House Government Organization Committee to become sponsors of bipartisan solutions to flooding. Please move HB 3502 through the Committee and vote "yes" on the floor.
Share your story. West Virginia Rivers Coalition always encourages you to customize your letters to decision-makers. Today, we urge you to share your flood story if you have one and would like to share. Tell leaders why funding the Flood Resiliency Trust Fund is important to you and your community.
