Join WV Rivers Coalition in supporting the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) proposed Methane Emissions Charge for petroleum and natural gas systems within the Methane Emissions Reduction Program.
Oil and gas companies are the largest industrial source of methane emissions, and West Virginia ranks in the top 5 gas-producing states in the country. With the completion of the Mountain Valley Pipeline and plans for a blue hydrogen hub in our region, methane emissions are likely to increase. The EPA's methane emissions charge is crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting our environment.
In the Appalachia region, oil and gas pollution disproportionately affects elderly and low-income communities. A third of West Virginians live within a half mile of an oil and gas site, exposing them to hazardous air pollutants that worsen respiratory diseases. West Virginia ranks highest nationally for heart attacks, cancer mortality, and chronic respiratory diseases, making residents extremely vulnerable to pollution.
Reducing methane pollution is the fastest, most cost-effective way to slow climate change and mitigate severe weather events like wildfires, droughts, and floods. West Virginia faces significant flood risks, with nearly one in four properties at high risk. Implementing the methane emissions charge not only benefits the climate but also creates thousands of new, good-paying jobs in the methane mitigation sector, addressing West Virginia's economic challenges.
The EPA's Methane Emissions Reduction Program presents a unique opportunity to curb methane emissions, create jobs, and protect public health. By supporting these commonsense fees, we can safeguard our communities and provide for a healthier environment across West Virginia.
Add your voice to support the EPA's Methane Emissions Charge today. Together, we can protect our environment, improve public health, and build a brighter future for West Virginia.
Thank you for standing with WV Rivers Coalition in advocating for policies based on sound science to protect our environment and public health.
